General Information on Admissions

All applicants to the M.D./Ph.D. Program at Georgetown University are required to submit an application to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in addition to the AMCAS application which is submitted to the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

All hard copy materials (such as personal statement, additional letters of recommendation, etc.) should be sent directly to the following address:

    Office of Biomedical Graduate Education
    Attn: M.D./Ph.D. Credentials
    Georgetown University
    Box 571411-P
    NE303 Medical-Dental Building
    3900 Reservoir Road, N.W.
    Washington, D.C. 20057-1411

Applicants to the M.D./Ph.D. Program are required to be applicants to the School of Medicine, with the exception of current Georgetown medical students who wish to apply with advanced standing. For M.D./Ph.D. applicants, the deadline for both the M.D. and the M.D./Ph.D. applications (including the submission of all related credentials and required materials) is November 16 prior to the desired year of matriculation. Please note that this deadline is earlier than that for regular School of Medicine applicants. If at any point an applicant no longer wishes to be considered for the combined-degree program, only the regular School of Medicine deadlines will apply. Applicants who are unable to complete their applications by November 16 may petition the Admissions Committee for special consideration; these requests must be received, in writing, by November 1, and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students accepted for admission to the combined-degree program are implicitly accepted into each of the participating graduate training programs, and are expected to confirm a sponsoring graduate program by the end of their first year of study.

All applicants are screened by the Admissions Committee to ensure that Program prerequisites are satisfied. In addition to those identified by the School of Medicine, prerequisites for admission to the M.D./Ph.D. Program include the following:

  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores of 10 or above in each subject area
  • Previous research experience
  • Publications (preferred)
  • United States citizenship or status as a Permanent Resident

NOTE: Applicants to the Department of Philosophy's program in bioethics are also required to submit scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

The Admissions Committee reserves the right to waive one or more of the prerequisites in individual cases for students with special circumstances such as: exceptional credentials in two or more of the primary review criteria (GPA, MCATs, GREs, and research experience), minority status, or a strong post-undergraduate academic, research, and/or publication record.

Those meeting the prerequisites are evaluated by the Admissions Committee and selected candidates are invited for interview. The interview visit for invited M.D./Ph.D. candidates takes place over two days; the first day consists of the standard interview vist for the School of Medicine (M.D. program); the second day consists of M.D./Ph.D.-specific meetings with faculty in the student's general area of research interest, as well as interactions with current students in Georgetown's dual-degree program. Faculty interviewers submit an interview evaluation to the Admissions Committee for incorporation into the applicant's file. The Admissions Committee meets regularly to review and act upon completed applications, which may be "Accepted," "Deferred" for additional information, or "Denied." Admission to the combined-degree program is conditional upon satisfactory completion of the undergraduate degree.

Subsequent to this preliminary evaluation and ranking, the most promising applicants may be invited back for a second "recruitment" visit. Final decisions are received separately from the School of Medicine and the M.D./Ph.D. Program. Applicants not accepted by the School of Medicine cannot be considered for the combined-degree program.

Application Instructions for the M.D./Ph.D. Program

Receipt by the Office of Graduate Biomedical Education of the Supplemental Application Form for the M.D./Ph.D. Program initiates consideration of your application as a candidate for the dual-degree program.

In addition to the Supplemental Application Form for the M.D./Ph.D. Program (and the AMCAS application), applicants are also required to submit a Graduate School Application Form.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR COMPLETING THE GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATION

  • Please be sure that your Graduate School Application indicates that you are applying to the dual M.D./Ph.D. degree program. Failure to specify application to the dual-degree program could result in failure to process your application through the M.D./Ph.D. Admissions Committee.

  • The GRE is required only for applicants to the Philosophy/Bioethics track. Applicants for "Generic" admission (which includes all basic science departments and interdisciplinary programs in the biomedical sciences) are not required to submit a GRE score report, as the MCAT is used in lieu of the GRE. Applicants for the Philosophy/Bioethics track must have an official GRE score report submitted to Georgetown University directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), in addition to the MCAT.

  • A separate Graduate School application fee is not required for M.D./Ph.D. applicants. Your Medical School application fee covers your application to the dual-degree program.

  • In lieu of the 500-word statement requested by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, please prepare an Academic Statement of Purpose as specified on the Supplemental Application Form for the M.D./Ph.D. Program.

IMPORTANT: ALL paper documents must be submitted directly to the following address:

Office of Biomedical Graduate Education
Attn: M.D./Ph.D. Credentials
Georgetown University
Box 571411-P
NE303 Medical-Dental Building
3900 Reservoir Road, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20057-1411

DO NOT send hard copy application materials (such as transcripts and letters of recommendation) directly to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as this may delay expedited processing and review of your application by the M.D./Ph.D. Admissions Committee.

CHECKLIST: The following items must be submitted together in one envelope to the Office of Graduate Biomedical Education at the address provided above:

Additional letters of recommendation may be submitted directly by the recommender. However, if an applicant wishes to submit additional letters along with their application packet, each recommendation must be placed in an envelope, sealed and signed by the recommender, and included unopened in the application packet.
