Since the Five-Year M.D. Research Track Program is not a degree-granting program in itself, students are admitted to the program via an undifferentiated mechanism.  In other words, students in this program are not required to declare a consistent area of research concentration.  While students are encouraged to conduct their summer labortory rotations in areas that will ultimtely assist them in identifying a sponsoring laboratory for their primary research period, students have the flexibility to work with faculty from different department or programs, as noted in the program overview.  Students successfully completing this program will graduate from the Georgetown University School of Medicine with Honors in Research.

The curriculum for Five-Year M.D. Research Track students would basically consist of the following:

Summer Prior to Matriculation

  • 4-6 week Laboratory Research Rotation, commencing the first week of July of the year of matriculation

Year One

  • First year of the M.D. (Preclinical) Curriculum, commencing in mid-August

Summer Between Years One and Two

  • 4-6 week Laboratory Research Rotation, commencing upon completion of the first year M.D. curriculum

Year Two

  • Second year of the M.D. (Preclinical) Curriculum

Year Three

  • 12 month Intensive Research Period, commencing upon completion of the second year M.D. curriculum

Year Four

  • Third year of the M.D. (Clinical) Curriculum

Year Five

  • Fourth year of the M.D. (Clinical) Curriculum
