DC Summer Youth Employment Program

The Georgetown University Office of External Affairs requests your participation in The District of Columbia's Summer Youth Employment Program. This is an opportunity to participate in one of Georgetown's many partnerships with the city. For additional information see the announcement below and contact Brenda Atkinson-Willoughby - Director, Government & Community Relations at 687-7035 or ba3@georgetown.edu . You must act soon to make your interest known.

For the last two summers the Department of Human Resources hired an intern through the program and we were very satisfied with the ability of each student and job performance. The Office of External Affairs worked with us, and will with you, to understand your needs and in selecting a qualified student.

Thank you for considering this opportunity. It is also a cost effective way of hiring summer help.

Best regards,
Mary Anne Mahin

Mayor Adrian Fenty's 2009
Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

June 22 - August 21, 2009

In an effort to provide every DC youth an opportunity to register for and work in the 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), DC Mayor Adrian Fenty seeks to match hundreds of area interns with jobs in Washington, DC?s business sector. Businesses are asked to place DC youth ?in meaningful entry level positions, where they are exposed to professional work environments and career industries that enhance their knowledge and empower them to make long-term career choices.

Georgetown University, in support of this effort, would like to match at least 20 area interns with jobs at Georgetown this summer. The SYEP begins on Monday, June 22, 2009 and ends on Friday, August 21, 2009, lasting nine (9) weeks.

To ensure the job experience this summer is a first-rate experience for all participants, mechanisms to assist employers and youth will be incorporated in the program at Georgetown:

  • All student interns will be interviewed and screened by a representative from Georgetown University. Only candidates matching GU?s criteria will be selected.
  • Youth interns will participate in Georgetown University?s orientation on the first day on the job.
  • Routine monitoring and on-going coaching by GU staff will occur throughout the nine (9) weeks.
  • DC will pay up to $6.55. Businesses are asked to either
supplement this amount or to subsidize the costs.

To make this summer internship program a success, we need the support and participation from GU offices willing to hire DC youth.
