"Our internal search capability can provide departments with expert recruiting assistance for high priority and hard-to-fill positions without the high cost of engaging a search firm." Source: Blue & Gray (November 3, 2008) For more than 25 years, Hoya Staffing has helped Georgetown faculty and staff fill positions on a temporary or temp-to-hire basis. Now, the staffing service has added internal executive searches to its capabilities. Most vacant positions appear on the university's human resources Web site, and departments handle the entire search process themselves. But external recruitment and search agencies are often used for high-level management positions. Laura Bryant, director of Hoya Staffing, wants to change that with the addition of the office's new search mechanism. "Our internal search capability can provide departments with expert recruiting assistance for high priority and hard-to-fill positions without the high cost of engaging a search firm," she said. Parts of the service already have been put to use. Last semester, university safety began looking for a new director of the Department of Public Safety (DPS). "They did all the upfront work that led to us narrowing our search down to about half a dozen people," said Rocco DelMonaco, vice president for university safety. Hoya Staffing helped university safety produce an accurate job description, place strategic advertisements within various law enforcement associations and publications, participate in search committee meetings and conduct the initial round of phone interviews. DelMonaco said more than 100 applications from across the nation flooded the office in a short span of time. "We even had some come in from Europe," he added. The former DPS director retired this past May. By June, the office had hired new director Jeff Van Slyke for the post. "We mostly just coordinated and facilitated the DPS search," Bryant said. "I didn't need to research, source and network to find candidates as we would do in a full search." Hoya Staffing also works with candidates to keep them informed and engaged as the interview process continues. "That last piece is, perhaps, the most critical piece in a nationwide search," she said. Jason Ackerman, the new chief audit executive in the senior vice president's office, agrees. "I definitely felt like all of my questions were answered and that I was kept updated throughout the process," said Ackerman, who was hired four months ago as a result of Hoya Staffing's full search service. Bryant's office is now hoping to provide the service to more departments. "I don't think we're on a lot of people's minds for this type of recruitment," Bryant said. "This service is still relatively new, but I think we'll start seeing more interest as more positions become vacant. |
