School of Foreign Service 40-Course Graduation Requirement:

Students in the SFS are required to complete a minimum of 40 college courses in order to earn the BSFS degree. The following rules apply:

  • In order to count for graduation purposes, a course must be worth three or more credit hours. Map of the Modern World (INAF 008) and other one credit courses do not count towards the 40-course requirement.
  • Courses worth fewer than three credit hours may not be combined with other courses in order to equal a three credit course.
  • Courses worth more than three credit hours only count as one course towards the 40-course requirement.
  • Advanced credits (AP, IB, 13th Year Degrees) are equivalent to courses and count towards the 40-course requirement.
  • Course work completed at other universities, including during overseas study, counts towards the 40-course requirement.

Note on Intensive Language Courses:

SFS waives one free elective for every two intensive language courses that a student completes. Students are eligible for a maximum of two of these waivers.

Students with questions about the course-count requirement are encouraged to speak with their dean.
