Faculty Advisors - SFS Faculty Mentor Program

Students who choose to participate in the SFS Faculty Mentor Program seek mentors from among the faculty of the major field committee. Students and faculty who choose to participate in the program must sign the SFS Faculty Mentor Program Agreement Form.  The faculty mentor commit to the following:

  • Reviews major declaration essay and discuss with student at first meeting
  • Be available to meet with student at least twice a semester, once before pre-registration and once for a mid semester review
  • Offers a general review of course choices each semester to make sure that the courses chosen fit in with future goals as outlined in major declaration essay*
  • Counsels students about all aspects of academic life at Georgetown
  • Introduces students to colleagues with similar intellectual interests
  • Keeps students informed of novelties in professional life such as lectures, publications, plans for a leave of absence or sabbatical, etc.
  • Advises about graduate school and professional options
  • When appropriate
  • Writes letter(s) of recommendation
  • Helps refine honor/research proposal, study abroad applications, and graduate school applications

 

Students agree to the following:

  • Writes thoughtful major declaration essay and brings two copies to first meeting
  • Keeps faculty mentor posted on academic progress and/or novelties
  • Seeks out professor's help in creating honor/ research proposal, study abroad application, graduate school applications, etc
  • Schedules at least two meetings a semester, one before pre-registration and one in the middle of the semester
