About CULP

Student studying

The major in Culture & Politics addresses the links between cultural identity and questions of power and authority in society.

The major is cross-disciplinary in nature, drawing on literature, history, philosophy, fine arts, religious studies, cultural anthropology and social and political thought to illuminate those links and the ways they have been expressed in different societies and cultures throughout history.

Culture & Politics majors explore the construction of cultural and political identity, and how that construction shapes and informs people's outlooks, perceptions and beliefs. Students critically consider a broad range of texts, documents and artifacts, including film, art, music and visual media as well as written sources.

The major exposes students to a range of theoretical tools and methodological approaches to cultural analysis, and places special emphasis on the development of critical thinking, argumentation and writing skills.
