Declaring the major

To officially declare your major:

1.  Complete a major declaration form, indicating which core courses you have completed and those you still need to take. Indicate when you plan to fulfill outstanding requirements.

2.  Attach a short essay (250-500 words) outlining the intellectual theme you hope to pursue in the context of your major.  Be sure to identify themes/questions you wish to explore as well as how (which lenses) you plan to do so.  If you want to to study abroad,  please include your rationale for the specific program and course of study you want to undertake and how this experience might complement your major.  Finally, provide a list of at least 5 courses from  current/past CULP lists that could be applied toward your theme. (Note: this is only tentative as course offerings do change).

A sample essay is available for review.

3.  You have the option of choosing a professor to serve as your faculty mentor.  Faculty mentors must be selected from the list of field committee members. There are no exceptions to this rule.  You may already know a professor on the field committee with whom you would like to work closely over the next two years.  If you need advice identifying faculty with scholarly interests similar to your own, please consult with your curricular dean.

4.  Once your major declaration is complete, you must make an appointment for a sophomore review with the curricular dean. The purpose of the sophomore review is to assess your progress toward graduation and make you aware of remaining requirements and opportunities. During the meeting, the curricular dean will review your major declaration and core curriculum worksheet with you, and address any questions you may have.
