Structure
The structure of research papers differs across disciplines. For some, a division of the thesis into discrete chapters dealing with multiple dimensions of a particular topic may be suitable. In others, defined sections presenting hypotheses, analysis, and conclusions are required. Students should work closely with their mentors and the field committee chairs to choose an appropriate structure. ArgumentWhether based on empirical or conceptual research, the thesis must have a clear and well-reasoned argument at its core. Students must take a position on a specific issue, show why it is important, and argue for a particular way of understanding it. StyleThe thesis should be written in a clear, professional, and engaging style. The quality of the writing is inseparable from the quality of research. Poorly written theses that are well-researched or well-written theses that are poorly researched are unlikely to receive honors. LengthThe thesis should be in the range of 50-80 pages. The student should speak with his or her mentor to clarify a proper length. |
