Incompletes
Incomplete (N) grades are granted only in cases of serious illness or other grave situations that prevent a student from completing coursework by the end of the semester. Incompletes will not be granted to allow a student to escape the consequences of poor time management. Students needing incompletes due to a currently existing condition should request them before the start of final examinations. For emergency situations during the final examinations period, see a dean immediately. Please note that deans may not authorize incompletes without adequate documentation.
To request an incomplete, you must first see a dean with appropriate documentation of your illness or emergency, and then secure the approval of the professor. Generally, a note from a physician on official letterhead stating that the student is too ill to complete academic responsibilities is required.
Students may not request an incomplete for a class after the scheduled final examination for that class, when the course officially ends.
All work for incomplete grades must be turned in to the professor by September 15 (Spring incompletes) or March 15 (Fall incompletes). N grades that are not completed by the deadline will result in an F on the student’s transcript. Students are generally not allowed to receive extensions beyond the incomplete deadlines.
Students who receive multiple incompletes may not be allowed to enroll in future courses until all work has been satisfactorily completed. Students may also be asked to take a medical leave of absence in the semester following their illness, in order to recover and complete outstanding coursework.
A note on unauthorized incompletes (or “FA” grades):
All incompletes must be approved by the Dean’s Office. Professors may not give students extensions beyond the end of the semester without permission. Students who receive unauthorized incompletes will see a grade of “F” on their transcripts and risk being placed on academic probation .Study abroad candidates jeopardize their nominations by taking unauthorized incompletes.
