Applying to the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service

Prospective students apply to the School of Foreign Service through the University's Office of Admissions. Georgetown has four undergraduate schools, so applicants should specify their interest in the School of Foreign Service when requesting information from the Admissions Office. On the admissions form, applicants should indicate SFS and follow the corresponding instructions outlined for completing the admissions essays.

Language Requirements:

Although it is encouraged, applicants to the School of Foreign Service are not required to take SAT II exams in foreign language. SFS is interested in students with a wide variety of language backgrounds, including those who have studied Latin. Language placement exams are offered at the beginning of every school year to assist students who wish to continue studying a language in determining what level to enroll in. Students are also more than welcome to begin the study of a new language when they arrive at Georgetown and are under no pressure to continue studying a language that they have a previous background in.

Economics Requirements:

Applicants are not required to have studied economics in high school. Students who score highly on the AP exams may be eligible to receive college credit, but it is understood that most students will be introduced to the discipline when they arrive at Georgetown. Students with a strong math background should be well prepared for entry into the economics curriculum.

During my time in Washington, I completed internships at Amnesty International, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, ánd the House of Representatives International Affairs Committee´s Subcommittee on Europe. Additionally, I volunteered as Research Assistant at the Nonprofit Information and Training Centre in Budapest during my time in Hungary. I think that gaining professional experience prior to graduation is an essential-albeit often neglected-part of university education, and I am very glad to have had the chances I did. In my experience, Georgetown`s location in Washington gives a number of opportunities to students who with to work in the non-profit world, government, or international affairs
