"GLS is an incredibly useful forum, especially in a world where all we seem to see are deepening cleavages."

GLS Alumni in the News

John Walcott, Washington bureau chief of the McClatchy Co., adjunct professor in the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) Program at Georgetown, and GLS Alumnus ('85) has been named the first recipient of the I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.

The award cites, among his other accomplishments, the strong leadership shown by Walcott of his team of reporters in the period before the Iraq war.   Their probing, skeptical coverage of events came at a time when most domestic news organizations did not adequately question the motives and rationale that lay behind the U.S. invasion of Iraq.  The I.F. Stone Medal recognizes journalistic independence in the tradition of investigative journalist I.F. Stone.

Ritt Bjerregaard, GLS Alumna ('84), former Education Minister of Denmark, and former EU Commissioner for the Environment began her term as Lord Mayor of Copenhagen in January 2006.  Bjerregaard is Copenhagen's first female Lord Mayor and was featured in 2007 as one of Time Magazine's Innovators for her 'Daddy Forever' campaign, which aims to get fathers more involved in raising their children by providing instruction and other inducements--including 14 weeks of paid time off for working fathers.
