What are the potential advantages when a student takes a Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA) for mental health reasons rather than some other form of leave?

  • Most importantly, a medical leave of absence allows students whose academic progress has been seriously compromised by a mental health condition or illness to take time away from Georgetown University without penalty.  Such leave affords students time to pursue treatment and eventually return to the University with a significantly improved chance of success academically and personally.
  • An MLOA sometimes qualifies a student to initiate a leave of absence later in the semester than might normally be permitted for other forms of leave.
  • If an MLOA is being sought during an active semester, then the disposition of coursework for that semester can be determined in conversation with your dean.  Deans have a variety of remedies at their disposal within the context of an MLOA.
  • Depending on the applicable rules and regulations, students may not have to start repaying student loans.  Consult the Office of Student Financial Services for information.
  • For international students, an MLOA may provide a way to remain in the U.S. while maintaining a legal status.  Please consult the Office of International Programs for more information.
  • For graduate students, an MLOA may in some cases allow the student's guarantee of funding to remain in effect.  Please consult your department and the Graduate School as to your particular situation.
  • The duration of an MLOA is typically open-ended.  Thus it is easier to take an extended leave with an MLOA than with other forms of leave.
  • For students with tuition reimbursement insurance, an MLOA often qualifies a student for benefits under such plans.
  • For students who are covered under their parents' health insurance plans, they are sometimes still considered "students" whereas taking another type of leave of absence may nullify their student status and their health insurance coverage.  Please check with your health insurance carrier as to your particular situation.
