HOW TO USE RESNET: MEDIA ADAPTERS

What is a media adapter?

In addition to SaxaNet wireless networking, Village A, Harbin, New South, and Alumni Square are outfitted with fiber optic network wiring. Students living in any of these buildings will need special media adapter equipment to connect to the wired internet connection in their rooms.

Even if you live in a building that requires a media adapter, you will still need to have an Ethernet card and a length of CAT-5 10Base-T Ethernet cable.  We do not supply this equipment, but it may be purchased at the Georgetown University Bookstore, at Vital Vittles, or any computer/office supply store.

How do I get one?

In order to borrow a media adapter, you must first obtain a confirmation number by completing the online media adapter sign out form. To access the form, you'll need your NetID and password.

After obtaining a confirmation number, come to the UIS Service Desk in St. Mary's G-39 with your GOCard and we will issue you a media adapter. We will also distribute media adapters at special technology events during New Student Orientation.

When you sign out an adapter, an e-mail will automatically be sent to you outlining the equipment procedures and policy.

How much does it cost?

The university loans you the media adapter equipment free of charge.  You will be charged, however, if you do not return the equipment in working order.  The current costs of the pieces of equipment are as follows:

  • Transceiver: $70.00
  • Fiber cord: $20.00
  • Power Adapter: $10.00

If you damage your equipment during the school year, please come to the UIS Service Desk to find out about obtaining a replacement.
